Laminate flooring — AC classes, thickness, water and installation

Use classes and AC ratings, thickness, water resistance and installation requirements. Match a specific product to your space.

Published by LaFloorBasis: documentation linked in the sources.
Class 32, AC4, 8 mm and 24-hour water resistance describe different properties. They refer to intended use, surface abrasion, thickness and water exposure conditions. None is a complete quality rating.

When is laminate worth considering?

Laminate combines a decorative surface, often with a wood effect, with an HDF wood-based core. Consider it for living rooms, bedrooms, children’s rooms and home offices when you want a choice of finishes, straightforward care and floating installation. Selected collections are also approved for kitchens and underfloor heating.

Consider other options if you want a real wood surface that can be sanded, or regular wetting without a product specifically approved for those conditions. An uneven subfloor needs preparation whichever material you choose. For acoustic requirements, compare complete floor assemblies.

How is a laminate plank built?

Laminate cross-section: protective surface, decor, HDF core and balancing layer1. Protective surface2. Decorative layer3. HDF core and machined joints4. Balancing layer
Schematic only; layer thicknesses are not to scale. Product construction varies.

The protective surface resists wear, the decor provides the appearance, the core supports loads and the backing helps limit distortion. Laminate cannot be sanded and refinished like wood flooring.

What do use classes 31, 32 and 33 mean?

The first digit, 3, denotes commercial use; the second indicates its intensity. These products may also be suitable for homes. The classes are not simply bedroom, living-room and hallway ratings.

Commercial use classification
ClassIntensityExample
31ModerateHotel bedroom or conference room
32GeneralOffice with normal traffic
33HeavyBusy office or commercial interior

A higher class meets requirements for more intensive use and covers more than abrasion alone. It is not a ranking of appearance, acoustics, thermal performance or resistance to every kind of flooding.

AC3, AC4 and AC5: abrasion resistance

AC stands for Abrasion Class. A controlled laboratory test wears the surface and assesses a defined point of decor wear. Higher classes require higher test performance.

Example thresholds in EN 13329 product data sheets
ClassMinimum test revolutions
AC32,000
AC44,000
AC56,000

Compare results using the method and standard edition stated in the product documentation. Revolutions do not predict footsteps or years of service. Abrasion is not scratching from grit, claws or furniture. AC also does not rate water resistance or joint strength. An AC4 product can be a better fit than AC5 if its other properties better meet your needs.

Is 12 mm better than 8 mm?

With the same core material and comparable construction, greater thickness increases bending stiffness. It does not establish better joints, surface durability or moisture protection, and does not relax subfloor flatness requirements.

Thickness also increases finished floor height and, for the same material, thermal resistance. A thinner approved plank may therefore suit underfloor heating better. Compare technical data, door clearances and the whole assembly including underlay. Thicker is not automatically better.

What does 24, 48 or 72-hour water resistance mean?

Prolonged moisture can swell HDF. Manufacturers reduce this risk through modified cores, treated edges and tighter connections; the combination varies by collection.

For example, EGGER declares up to 24 hours for NatureSense Aqua and up to 72 hours for NatureSense Aqua+. These statements concern specific systems. If another product states 48 hours, read its own installation and protection terms.

A spilled water bowl noticed the following morning illustrates why protection can matter. It does not establish that damage will be avoided: water quantity, its route, joint condition and perimeter finishing all matter. Remove spills as soon as you notice them, even on a 72-hour product.

Check what the declaration covers

  • Surface, joints or complete assembly, and the test method used.
  • Approval for the intended kitchen or bathroom.
  • Required seals around edges, pipes and thresholds.
  • Warranty exclusions for moisture from below, plumbing failures, flooding or prolonged dampness.
  • Cleaning rules and requirements to remove spills promptly.

“Water resistant” and “waterproof” are not enough to compare products. Longer stated times do not establish better protection when test or warranty conditions differ. The floor covering does not replace room waterproofing.

Subfloor, underlay and heating

Flat, dry, stable and clean

We assess flatness, moisture with a suitable method, cracks, loose areas and repairs. Limits come from the selected system’s instructions. Underlay does not correct substantial unevenness; movement can stress joints and lead to noise or gaps.

Underlay: thicker is not necessarily better

Consider load resistance, joint compatibility, thermal resistance and acoustics. Walking noise in the room and impact sound transmitted downstairs are different concerns. Check moisture-control layer requirements and instructions for attached underlays; do not add another layer without approval.

Underfloor heating

Check the permitted heating type, maximum surface temperature, screed preparation and commissioning, and the combined thermal resistance of flooring and underlay. A heating symbol alone is not enough.

What to check with underfloor heating

Expansion gaps and common installation mistakes

A floating floor must be able to change dimensions. Leave specified gaps at walls, pipes and fixed elements. Maximum installation areas, doorways and fixed furniture arrangements follow the product instructions. Do not assume uninterrupted installation across every room is permitted.

  • Installing over damp or uneven subfloors.
  • Using overly soft or unapproved underlay.
  • Omitting gaps or trapping the floor under fixed furniture.
  • Leaving joints damaged or incompletely connected.
  • Skipping required acclimatisation or heating preparation.
  • Incorrect sealing in areas exposed to water.

Laminate, SPC or LVT vinyl?

LaFloor separates SPC from flexible LVT, although market terminology may include SPC within a wider LVT category. Our LVT category covers both glue-down and click products.

Compare construction and installation requirements
MaterialTypical systemWhat to check
LaminateHDF core, usually floating clickRatings, water protection, underlay and expansion gaps
SPCRigid mineral-polymer core, usually clickFlatness, joint support, temperature and fixed furniture
Glue-down LVTFlexible covering bonded to the subfloorSmoothness, moisture, adhesive and preparation costs
Click LVTFlexible locking elements in an approved systemSubfloor, underlay, expansion gaps and heat exposure

Every system needs a prepared subfloor. Water resistance of vinyl itself does not protect the subfloor against flooding. None of these surfaces can be sanded like wood. Compare flooring for your home

How LaFloor installation works

  1. Discussion and documents: location, area, room use and selected flooring.
  2. Site assessment: subfloor, moisture, flatness, heating and finished height.
  3. Agreed scope: repairs, underlay, laying direction, cuts, gaps, skirting and transitions.
  4. Installation and handover: work to system instructions and guidance on care.

LaFloor provides preparation and installation services; you buy the flooring. Before purchase we can discuss the technical sheet, underlay and suitability. We cover Józefosław, Piaseczno, Warsaw and locations within 50 km of Józefosław.

Questions before buying

Does AC5 guarantee resistance to dog claws?

No. AC measures abrasion, not every kind of scratching. Check surface information, use entrance mats and remove grit.

Can 12 mm laminate replace levelling?

No. Manufacturer flatness limits still apply. Greater stiffness does not replace adequate support.

Can I install 72-hour laminate in a bathroom?

Only if the collection is approved for that use and all installation, sealing and use requirements are met. The number alone is not approval.

Is the survey free?

Survey and consultation are free within 10 km of Józefosław. Travel terms elsewhere are agreed individually.
